Nelly: May 20

This week was a great week for Nelly!

She saddles up great, with very minimal groundwork needed before mounting up. Because the arena was wet, we spent our rides down in the hay yard working on Flexing, Bending at the Walk, Vertical Flexion at the Standstill & Walk, Stopping, Backing, walking & trotting figure-eights, & trotting & loping circles. We also moved from the hackamore into the snaffle bit & she's done very well. While she kicked up in the hind end a few times when I was encouraging her to lope, she's done well picking up the lope with the squeeze of my legs & verbal "kiss." While she has called to the other horses during our rides, I'm not too concerned about it. That will disappear as she gets more confident with what's being asked of her.

We're going to have some fun over the next couple of months!

Next week, we'll continue to chip away at improving Nelly's lateral & vertical softness & responsiveness to my legs, & begin to work on body control exercises.

Next week's update will be posted on Saturday.

I do my best to get these updates posted in a timely manner, but it's not uncommon for me to be outside until after dark, depending on the weather, my schedule, & who gets worked when so updates will sometimes be posted quite late in the evening. Don't be alarmed if you don't see your update right away. In rare cases, I may have to push them until the next morning, but I'll reach out & let you know if so.
